Our reception rooms are characterized by sixteenth-century frescoes with grotesques of the painter called the Fornaretto Mantovano
Fornaretto Mantovano was present in the years 1582-1583 in Sabbioneta, where he worked inside the Palazzo del Giardino and the Ducal Palace for Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga. He was a collaborator of the painter Bernardino Campi, one of the most important exponents of Mannerism in Northern Italy.
The grotesques are a particular type of wall painting, which has its roots in Roman painting from the Augustan period and was rediscovered and made popular from the late fifteenth century. The grotesque decoration is characterized by the representation of phytomorphic beings, which merge in geometric and naturalistic decorations, structured in a symmetrical way, on a background generally white or monochrome.
